4913. Early Watermans (?) Safety Pen in 18ct Rolled Gold, Magnificent Fine Flex FIVE STAR Nib.

Description.

This is a lovely example of an early Safety Fountain Pen, The markings on the overlay say "Ideal 18K R" which suggests to me that the pen was made in France by Watermans. Safety pens were more prominent in Europe than they were in the UK and the USA. The pen is fitted with a Williamsons New York No.2 14ct nib which further muddies the waters as to its origin. There are none of the usual Watermans numbers on the base of the pen although the styling of the section is similar to the Watermans pens so.... who knows!!

The bottom line is that this is a fabulous example of a 1920's safety pen, the nib is stunning, with light pressure it writes with a silky smooth fine line measuring 0.5mm wide, with more pressure it flexes to a Double Broad measuring 1.5mm!! It writes beautifully through its entire range and is truly an impressive nib. I have not come across Williamson nibs before, but I will certainly be looking out for them in the future.

The 18ct rolled gold overlay is in good order with no signs of brassing even at the edges, the leaf pattern is crisp and the underlying Black Hard Rubber has survived the last 100 years without any fading.

The pen has been fully serviced with new seals fitted and is ready to write. It will be provided with an eyedropper with which to fill it.
